Canada Excellence Research Chair in
Developmental Immunology and Immunosenescence
With age, the human immune system becomes increasingly unable to respond at its best to infections, immunizations and tumors. This gradual deterioration is called immunosenescence. The Chair in Developmental Immunology and Immunosenescence at the Canadian Center for Vaccinology would provide leadership to a translational, interdisciplinary vaccinology and immunology research program by defining the nature of age-related immunodeficiencies and identifying targets for intervention to enhance and rebuild a "senescent" immune system. The program would develop new vaccines and adjuvants (agents that help vaccines work effectively) specifically for the elderly. The results would improve their quality of life by protecting them from severe and debilitating infectious diseases.
Canada Excellence Research Chair in
Ocean Science and Technology
The oceans, the life systems they support, and the resources they provide, are all under stress. The Chair in Ocean Science and Technology would lead world-class research on new ways of monitoring the ocean, understanding and predicting change, and solving practical problems related to using, managing and conserving marine resources. An important legacy of the Chair would be a new Institute for ocean science and technology that would bring together university, government and private sector partners to address "grand challenge" scientific questions, develop and commercialize new technologies, and tackle some of the most important environmental issues of our time.
