University of Manitoba Proposal

Canada Excellence Research Chair in Arctic Geomicrobiology and Climate Change
The Arctic is on its way towards a new balance. The observed reduction in the summer minimum of sea ice is alarming. At the current rate, we can expect to see ice-free Arctic summers around 2015. The speed of this change is challenging our ability to understand the complex relationships between climate, sea ice, ecosystem function, and the sustainable development of rich Arctic hydrocarbon and mineral resources. The Chair in Arctic Geomicrobiology and Climate Change would develop models able to predict change in both physical and biological parts of the ecosystem, and would develop cold-adapted bioremediation technologies to manage sustainable Arctic development.
