Canada Excellence Research Chair in Materials Engineering for Unconventional Oil Reservoirs
Nearly two decades ago, ground-breaking research at the University of Calgary led to a new, fundamental understanding of steam-assisted gravity drainage. This knowledge transformed the in situ oilsands industry. The Chair in Materials Engineering for Unconventional Oil Reservoirs will leverage this legacy of research excellence in new materials, chemistry, micro- and nanomaterials science, engineering, and technology development, to lead the next stage of transforming the oil sands industry. The proposed Chair will be unique in the world in developing new, in situ recovery to increase production while minimizing environmental impacts.
