The University of British Columbia Proposals

Canada Excellence Research Chair in Data-Intensive Methods in Economics

The Canada Excellence Research Chair in Data-Intensive Methods in Economics will aim to unlock the potential of “big data” for the benefit of Canadians. Based at The University of British Columbia’s Sauder School of Business, the Chair will serve as director of the school’s newly established Big Data: Methods and Practices Centre. The Chair will also lead an international research program in the analysis of large datasets as they relate to labour economics, international trade, and industrial organization. The research program has the potential to significantly improve both the productivity of Canadian firms and the efficiency of government public service delivery.

Canada Excellence Research Chair in Quantum Materials and Devices Based on Oxide Heterostructures

The Chair in Quantum Materials and Devices Based on Oxide Heterostructures will aim to advance science and technology arising from the astonishing electronic properties appearing at the physical interface between different quantum materials—also known as quantum heterostructures. The Chair’s research will leverage and complement past University of British Columbia investments geared towards propelling Canada to the forefront of this developing field, and will enhance Canada’s long-term global economic competitiveness. The research has the potential to lead a technological revolution and spawn entirely new industries in Canada in electronics, communications, energy, medicine and next-generation computing.
